Dhoopana with Aparajitha dhooma choornam is an ancient Ayurvedic practice of fumigation. It has been shown to effectively reduce microbial counts in air flora and can help in preventing the spread of seasonal communicable diseases. It is also a safe alternative to chemical fumigation. Its insecticidal activity has been previously documented and various forms of delivery of the Aparajitha dhooma choornam studied. Agarbatti sticks and dhoopana varthi forms have been suggested as user friendly alternatives to choornam burning. This review paper also proposes a novel way of incorporating Aparajitha dhooma choornam as a liquid repellent which can be used along with vaporisers. In modern homes; arranging for burning embers for the formation of fumes from Aparajitha dhooma choornam powder is practically difficult. For such settings, liquid repellent with electric vaporisers are an easier alternative and can be more conveniently used. Also, there is a preference to herbal agents for mosquito control due to toxicity issues of chemical repellants as well as allergic reactions. Novel formulations are needed which offer safe alternatives with lesser adverse environmental impact.
